FBI raid of Salt Lake City house of animal rights activists. Photo by Jordan Halliday.

FBI agents and law enforcement from multiple agencies have raided a well-known activist group house in Salt Lake City, Utah, today in connection with an investigation of Animal Liberation Front crimes in Iowa.

I just got off the phone with multiple housemates who were there witnessing the raid, and who were able to read the warrant. Details about all of this are still emerging, but at this point it is clear that the warrant was issued by the Southern District of Iowa, and authorizes the seizure of any books, pamphlets, computers and other materials tied to “animal enterprise terrorism.” [UPDATE: Here is copy of the warrant.]

Some background: In Minnesota, a graduate student named Scott DeMuth has been indicted on conspiracy charges under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act. The charges are related to a 2004 raid by the Animal Liberation Front at the University of Iowa.

Another Minnesota activist, Carrie Feldman, has been jailed for refusing to testify about her political beliefs and political associations before a grand jury. Feldman was a teenager at the time of the ALF crime, and says the grand jury is clearly an attempt to harass and intimidate the activist community.

So how did the FBI end up in Utah? One of the housemates, Peter Young, is repeatedly mentioned by name in the warrant. Young was one of the first people prosecuted for “animal enterprise terrorism” in connection to fur farm raids in the late 90s. (His co-defendant Justin Samuel is also mentioned in the warrant). He served two years in prison, and has been living in Salt Lake City, speaking at colleges, and writing on his website, Voice of the Voiceless. He is among the most vocal, public supporters of the ALF and direct action.

Iowa 80 world's largest truck stopThe only connection I can decipher between Young and the Iowa investigation is this: in an emergency motion filed against Scott DeMuth, to keep him in jail, the government calls DeMuth an “anarchist” and “domestic terrorist.” As evidence of this, they say he is an “associate” of Peter Young. As DeMuth’s faculty advisor has publicly explained, this is tied to his research as a graduate student.

There are about nine people living at the activist group house in Salt Lake. At least 15 computers were taken by the FBI, along with boxes of documents, notebooks, files, and address books. The house is well-known in the area as a gathering space for animal rights and other activists. No arrests have been made, and at this point it seems Iowa is being used as a pretext for a continued campaign of harassment and intimidation.

Among the items taken from the FBI’s terrorism raid: a postcard for Iowa 80, “the world’s largest truck stop.”

I’ll continue to update as this story develops. In the meantime, this is a good opportunity to plug the National Lawyers Guild hotline, 1-888-NLG-ECOL. Also, please write Carrie Feldman a letter as she continues to resist the grand jury witch hunt. Carolyn Feldman,

Hmm... I wonder when the last time was that the FBI broke in to an anti-abortionist's house and stole all their books and computers. You know.. those people that actually kill people...

People first? HA. That exact sentiment is why non human animals are enslaved and murdered at alarming numbers. WE don't hold animals above people but animals certainly deserve moral consideration and lives free from human exploitation. They don't need the same rights as us, but they most definitely have a right to live without pain and suffering, to live in their natural environments and not be classified as property or commodities to be used however humans see fit.

Carrie Feldman should be applauded as well, she did not give into the corrupt grand jury system and stood behind her political beliefs. I think she is released now, but I am not positively sure.

Who the hell are you to say what are better "causes"?. Any cause that fights against oppression, human and non human are causes that need to be fought. Right now your losing your civil liberties, is that a cause worth fighting for? Animal Liberation=Human Liberation. But that's just something you will never "get".

Everyone, keep writing our political prisoners!
  • Unbelievable for this to happen in the US in this century. We haven't come far from the 1960s when they did the same type of thing to the Civil Rights movement to shut them down.

Will, PERFECT picture there lower down in this article. PERFECT.
    Solidarity, Peter!

I have to say i amnt suprised ....
If that bill thing passes ( i am not at all up to date with this xD i am europeen ), then this site will probebly be in trouble....
This is just the begining in my opinion...

Hang in there Will Potter !!! and keep us up to speed :D
  • The government is working to keep corporate profits flowing like the blood from enslaved and murdered nonhuman animals in slaughterhouses, vivisection labs, and other places of horror.

Resist state repression - stand in solidarity with political prisoners!

This is too crazy. You would think that the FBI would have better things to do than to mess with a bunch of kids computers and phones. What an inconvenience to these students who need these computers for their jobs and school. What irreparable damages has the government caused these kids? What recourse do these kids have? These kids are not involved in what happened in Iowa in 2005 any more than at the time teenagers Carrie Feldman and Scott DeMuth were involved. The government is just looking to mess with peoples lives because they can and because they failed in their job to catch the real culprits in Iowa.

Lisa is absolutely right!! The Revolution began years ago, no more excuses allowed... Most of us our proud militants and will continue to fight for justice of the innocent and voiceless....

According to the criminal complaint, evidence ostensibly linking Scott DeMuth to Peter Young was found in a diary said to belong to DeMuth, which was seized from a Minneapolis house in a SWAT team raid on Sept. 1, 2008, the weekend before the Republican National Convention in St. Paul.
The preemptive police raids led to the arrests of eight local political organizers, the RNC 8, who are still facing felony conspiracy charges in state district court. The case has dragged on for 18 months. The RNC 8 and the RNC 8 Defense Committee have been sponsoring events in support of Scott and Carrie, and see all of these prosecutions as part of a process of political repression against radical political expression and organizing. The "associate" reference was made by the prosecution based on a journal seized from DeMuth's home.

From http://www.voiceofthevoiceless.org/battle-over-... "Prosecutors also focused on references in the journal to an alleged associate of DeMuth’s, identified in the journal only as “P”. They asserted “P” was me, arguing I was a “fugitive from justice” for 7 years, and this alleged relationship (Scott and I have never met)."

And I would hardly call a reference to the letter P as "ostensibly" linking DeMuth to Young.

Thank you for the link. I had no idea this even happened. All I can say is WTF?

As far as the raid goes, it's still just a bunch of bullshit and I am sure Peter Young is smart enough not to have any evidence that would incriminate him, not to say that there is any evidence. It's fucking scary that written words, words in opposition with the government and big corporations are considered threats, conspiracy and so on. I openly support the militant factions of the movement, will I be next? Young only runs a blog and does speaking at schools for christs sake! A mention of his name in a diary can make him a co-conspirator with someone else who got railroaded??? What a crock of shit. The only reason Young is being targeted is his website. He is a brilliant man, one which I consider a leader in the movement. The are just trying to remove him from the ranks.

Come on people. When are we going to do something?
  • Furderer
Get informed. Peter Young has done/and is currently doing much more than just hosting a website. He is a convicted felon - and spent two years bent over in jail - which he deserves. Ha ha - what goes around comes around!!!
  • Lisa/LiberationNOW
supposedly there is freedom of speech in this county and freedom of choice. No one is recruiting anyone. Yes he was convicted of a crime and is a felon, but so were Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King. Nelson Mandela, a convicted terrorist ended up the President of South Africa! Peter was convicted by an unjust law and unjust system of government. Many people have gone to jail to resist the tyranny and oppression of this world. They have made the ultimate sacrifice for what they believe in and that should be applauded.

    We're with you Peter!

Furderer or Joe, your such an asshole!

What all of these "supporters" of Peter Young don't get is that they are NOTHING but little pawns in Peter's ILLEGAL games. He DOES NOT want to get bent over in jail anymore - but actively recruits others to do his dirty work...not caring if they go to jail for "the cause". Get a life - join a real cause and let this FELON continue to ruin his own life not yours!
  • What's a "real cause"? One that is about humans only, instead of all animals? Speciesism needs to be challenged, just like racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression. Read David Nibert's Animal Rights/Human Rights and you'll see that human exploitation of other animals underpins and drives all hierarchical domination.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

    Real causes - here's 4 for starters.

    feedthechildren.org
    childfund.org
    redcross.org
    ncadv.org

Speciesism - I always love it when you play that card. Let's conduct a little experiment - you go up in the mountains, with nothing but the clothes on your back.....and live through all four seasons there. We'll see exactly what "species" survives.

    People first!!!
  • Furderer
You're really comparing yourselves to Martin Luther King, Jr and Nelson Mandela....really? You people are more off base than I thought. Martin Luther King, Jr. obeyed the law and by no means ever protested wearing a full faced ski mask toting a sign with a drawing of an AK47 stating "no compromise".
Nice try - but you people are not Martin Luther King Jr.'s.
Hi Lin - I don't know who Joe is - but sounds like I would love to meet you both!
I also love the advice Judith gives to all "don't say anything". Yeah - let your gaunt, hollow eyed, fraile boned, vegan lovin', non dairy latte drinking "friend" Carrie break the law and spend the rest of her life in prison....you guys give great advice. With friends like you who needs enemies? I wonder what kind of vegan meals they serve in prison....yummy! Well maybe she will be able to sleep on some organic cotton sheets - that have harmed no animals while being made.
Be strong Peter you hero - you watch all those farms - we're obviously watching you too!
  • Trish
Martin Luther King obeyed the law...... Hmmm... I'll just go ahead and quote his wife Coretta Scott King here for you. Pay extra close attention to that second sentence:

"This holiday honors the courage of a man who endured harassment, threats and beatings, and even bombings. We commemorate the man who went to jail 29 times to achieve freedom for others, and who knew he would pay the ultimate price for his leadership, but kept on marching and protesting and organizing anyway."

Homophobic rape jokes even more so...

Joe, is that you? It's been a while buddy....haven't seen you around. How've you been? The Bureau had you on any cool secret agent man missions latley?
