Now I understand why the group that fought the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act in Missouri had the backing of the Tea Party: They’re both out of their minds.

The Daily show had a great segment with Anita Andrew of the Alliance for Truth.

Among the gems of wisdom from Andrews:

“Proposition B is very similar to Obamacare. They’re expecting all the breeders to sit there and pay exorbitant amounts of care that are not needed. Like adequate food, adequate water, adequate space…”

Andrews responding to the ASPCA: “When people get free puppies they don’t value their puppies as much as they should.”

“Proposition B is one more step to making us a communist socialist society.”

This is the same group that called the Humane Society “radical” and “extremist.”

I posted this because it’s a great example of how industry groups take any meme that has been proven to work, and apply it to their own special interests. This is how “eco-terrorist” rhetoric became so popular; corporations and industry groups saw how effective “terrorism” language can in demonizing and persecuting entire groups of people. This is the same strategy, taken to even more absurd lengths. “Obamacare” misinformation helped derail modest health care reforms in Congress, and Andrews is applying the same buzzwords to groups like the Humane Society.

Of course, none of this makes any sense. But it doesn’t need to. I think it’s a great example of how, in the eyes of these people, facts matter much less than the latest guilt-by-association buzzword.

Thanks to Erik Marcus for the tip.

Andrews simply strings them both together in an attempt to equate “Prop B = bad” for viewers.

How can we help educate people on the meanings of words like Communist and Socialist? Can we ever get there? This tactic has been around for millennia. Think for instance of the simplistic “devil = bad” binary. Most people would probably laugh if Andrews had said that Prop B was an instrument of the devil but they blindly follow the same logic when confronted with communist, socialist, vegan, liberal, etc.

Thanks for the post, I’m glad someone is at least trying to point out how ridiculous these attempts are.

“Adequate food, adequate water, adequate space” are considered “exorbitant amounts of care?” This person should not be allowed to be around animals, much less pretend to speak on their behalf.

I watch this over and over… I can’t quit laughing. This is so true, but it’s sad if you think about it. What is wrong with people… this is about being humane and limiting over breeding… THAT’S ALL! Unfortunately this had to be voted on because of the greed of people and lack of concern for these poor dogs welfare. I have 4 mill survivors, it takes them so long to learn to trust people. They were 3-5 yrs. old, under-weight, needing health care. They never were on grass before, ran or knew what toys were. This is a fact, not dramatization. People need to be educated and not look away. The greed to make a living off of helpless animals for human benefit is wrong. Plain and simple. The law allows mills to still breed, but not near what they did. Bring in a good income anyway, they just have to be humane… what’s the problem?

I worked on this campaign, calling people in Missouri. About half of them hung the phone up on me. I had 2 mill dogs myself. One was a puppy (cute but not healthy) & the other a former breeding stud who was locked up for 4 years & our trainer suspected highly that he was beaten as well. It’s been 2 years now; he’s still on Paxil for panic attacks & is just now starting to let my husband pet him. Since the ppl who run factory farms (yes, cows, pigs, etc. too) are complete effing morons, the best we can do to affect their pocketbooks is to educate others to simply not buy from them.

It is frightening that there are still so many ignorant people! Even worse, it that they are part of the gene pool!
