    Argh. That cartoon makes me mad. Here’s what I don’t like about it:
    1. The assumption that property damage is terrorism
    2. The implied hypocrisy – if ELF members are fat, they are hypocrites.
    3. The fat shaming
    4. The implication that environmentalists are not patriots
    5. The crazy stigma – the 9/11 videos = conspiracy theories = crackpot

    And let me add that patriotism has nothing to do with military service. Despite the people who try to claim they are the only true Americans and everyone who doesn’t agree with them is a traitor, patriotism also has nothing to do with flags, corporate tax breaks, anthems, wars, capitalism, religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. The famous quote has it that patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel, but some suspect it’s the first. Many people serve their country by opposing militarism.

    That seems like an awfully broad definition don’t you think? to say that any action which, can intimidate or coerce is terrorism. By that definition an act of civil disobedience like those taken by Dr. Martin Luther King jr. would be considered terrorism, because they are illegal actions designed to coerce. Plus it’s ridiculous to compare a group of people who have never injured anyone (and go to great lengths to prevent injury) to a group like Al-Qaeda who targets innocent civilians indescriminently.

    It seems like those on the right, (like the above poster and the writer of this cartoon) like to resort to ad hominem attacks and straw men instead of explaining exactly why they disagree with the environmental movement. It’s much easier to just call environmentalists unpatriotic terrorist, then to actually justify things such as: urban sprawl, deforestation, GMO’s, fossil fuels ect. It’s funny to me how such blatant propaganda could be published into a daily newspaper, I mean it’s not even clever. It’s basically just saying the “Earth Liberation Front are fat terrorists.” Talk about lack of critical thinking. This is a new low, even for the corporate media.

    If you build it we will burn it. Nothing terror-inducing there. Arson, vandalism – just harmless stuff. Is that really what environmentalists want to associate themselves with? Most pro-lifers denounce the terrorist factions that do bombings and vandalism. If I were an environmentalist I’d do the same with ELF and ALF.

    I “denounce” the ELF and ALF every time I write or speak about this topic–the things they do are illegal and IMO wrong–but the fact remains that destroying property is nowhere near the same league as killing or plotting to kill human beings. I have never understood how anyone can think there is any comparison between the two.
