Bob Barker Video Supporting the “Terrorist” Animal Liberation Front

in Activism & Activists' Response

Bob Barker, former host of the Price is Right, says:

“I think that the ALF, the Animal Liberation Front, is probably, has in recent years, probably been
one of the most effective, if not the most effective, element of the animal rights movement.”

Yep, the clip is real. It was dug up and included in a campaign video produced by Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty USA called “Strike Back.” Barker famously ended every episode of the Price is Right with “Remember, have your pets spayed and neutered.” He has also donated millions of dollars to presitigious law schools, to establish animal rights law programs. Here is a New York Times piece on Barker’s law school donations.

The FBI labels the Animal Liberation Front the “number one domestic terrorism threat.” But if any FBI agents are thinking of harassing Barker or raiding his home, like they’ve been doing to other animal rights activists, they’d do well to remember the fight scene from Happy Gilmore.

To paraphrase George W. Bush: In this War on Terrorism, you’re either with Bob Barker, or against Bob Barker.

Aaaaw, that just made my day!!!

:) I thought folks might need something fun, after the frustrating posts this week.

  • http://www.diggingthroughthedirt.blogspot.com Tracy

You were absolutely right, Will. That’s fantastic.

  • Kathy

Maybe he’s one of our Masked Heroes…….. :-) Anyway, I commend him for his statements. At least we know he won’t sponsor rewards leading to arrests……..

  • http://www.greenisthenewred.com Will Potter

Ha! That’s a really good point, Kathy: Instead, he’s put his money towards amazing education programs.

  • Gumby

    I’m WITH Bob Barker!

  • Dryad38

He also gives grants for spay/neuter. We have a local mobile van that offers this service at a low price and free for low income families. Without Bob’s grants, we wouldn’t have been able to do this! The population of animals has been significantly lowered in southeast Kansas. Of course, lots of stupid people are still breeding!

  • cornwalls animal liberation army

GO BOB, ALL THE WAY TO OUR WAY!!! WE NEVER LEAVE ONE BEHIND AND WE WILL NEVER GO AWAY ONLY GET BIGGER AND BIGGER AND EVEN BIGGER………..A.L.F Cornwall’s Animal Liberation Front.

this is a great video! the soundtrack did kinda make me want to get out my glowsticks, though.

  • Joe

The segment with Bob looked like it was taped over 20 years ago, I wonder what Bob thinks of the ALF and their terrorist tactics now?

    @Kathy, post #4.
I sent a URL to Will’s blog post to a very liberal, very political, friend who has very little to do with veg*sm. Her reply was that she didn’t think Pacelle endorsing California’s version of the AETA or paying to put a bounty on activist heads was a big deal. It seemed understandable to her as a move to protect the political investments of HSUS.

I was thinking about that and how I have noticed that most people new to animal protection have only seen the good things ( of which there are many, they deserve credit ) HSUS has done.

My guess is that Wayne Pacelle believes that HSUS donors, potential donors and mainstream America sees the situation as my friend does…if they see at all. In other words, his actions will not bring negative consequences to him so he doesn’t need to care.

I don’t mean that as a slam against Pacelle. He has done a lot of good at HSUS. He isn’t any different from any mainstream politician or any other AR group leader. If you aren’t a constituent or a large donor they aren’t concerned. Again, this isn’t meant as a slam against him.

I guess I am trying to say that I got a reality check this week. Most people simply don’t care about the green scare or related issues. We are in a fringe minority.

    No offense to anybody.

  • Kathy

Steve: Actually, I think that animal welfare groups have really done a lot to damage the cause of animals. Although they help individual animals (for which I commend them, as well) they basically endorse the status quo. The philosophy of “animal welfare” seems to be to ease the human conscience in regard to man’s treatment of animals. It really does nothing to improve conditions for animals overall and it reinforces the existing system.

I’m quite sure that Wayne Pacelle got an earful about what people really think of him and HSUS. Of course, we’ll never see those responses to his request for people’s opinions of his actions, but he got them. ;-)

I have never before danced to an ALF video. Until today.
Maybe if ALF raids were more like dance parties we wouldn’t be so marginalized…

  • GW

years ago, i was at a huge fur free friday march in NYC. Bob Barker was at the front and while doing a news interview a woman came up to him and said that a person spit on her. His reply, “just one?” The guy rocks.

btw Will, why doesn’t your website come up when Googled? i get here via the counterpunch article. just wondering.

  • Cindy

I thank God everyday for those who support ALF, If I was younger I would be right out there with them. Someone has to take a stand.

  • http://www.greenisthenewred.com Will Potter

GW: I’m not sure what’s going on with Google. A while back, the site was hacked and then delisted from Google. They say it’s listed again, but it’s not showing up in search results. Anyone know what to do about this? Will

  • Kathy

I just found a great quote on the website of the North American Animal Liberation Press Office. They credit it as being from a book by Sam Harris (“The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason.”) I think it explains why people who claim to want animal rights, but do not feel comfortable participating in direct action should not criticize those who do–

“….when your enemy has no scruples, your own scruples become another weapon in his hand.”

Very true. The animal abusers commit the most heinous of crimes against the most innocent of victims, then criminalize those who free those animals and damage property. Then, people who claim to care about animals condemn those people who have saved them. Why is it that AR activists are expected to have “scruples” but animal abusers are not?? Anyone who truly cares for animals should not accept this double standard.

  • Joe

Kathy, do you or does anyone you know have diabetes and takes care of it? If so then you or they benefit every day from those “animal abusers commit the most heinous of crimes “. Think about that next time you see someone buy insulin.

  • Pingback: ALF Is Effective

  • Kathy

Joe: Most people have diabetes because of their own poor diets and failure to exercise. If anyone should be ill/perish as a result of their lifestyle choices, it should be them, not some innocent animal that has done nothing wrong. Unless you are willing to volunteer yourself as a test subject to save the human race, don’t be so quick to volunteer another.

Also–you might want to read up on the facts re: animal research. It really does not benefit humans anyway because animals are not enough like us to make the results useful.

  • http://americanweekends.wordpress.com/ Liz

Just because insulin was tested on animals doesn’t mean that animals are responsible for insulin’s usefulness to us. We could have easily skipped the animal testing and tested it in human trials only.

In fact, all medications that are tested on animals require further testing on humans before receiving FDA approval, which is it’s own argument for abolishing the practice.

Furthermore, it’s been proven that testing medications on animals (even those most like us, such as chimps) is in no way indicative of how that medication will behave in people. And not only that, but a disease like diabetes that is artifically created in a lab setting is completely different than a disease which arrises spontaneously, and the information which is gleaned from those settings is often erroneous and inadequate for our use.

    Try again, Joe.

  • http://www.not-quiteright.net/tvg/ Alex

I agree. Industry understands profit, and some members of the ALF have indeed threatened this profit. However, industry also understands public opinion, which it has made efforts to form in such a way that the ALF is viewed as the enemy; it has been effective. Therefore, the “success” of the ALF is a double-edged sword.

  • harmony

Bob Barker? You mean the guy who sexually harassed one of the models on his show and then fired the ones who wouldn’t lie for him when he was sued over it ? THAT Bob Barker? Oh, a real saint, that one.

Oh, but those are just WOMEN, not animals. Less worth of concern, to you, I suppose.

You want to glorify this guy for trying to make sure that dogs go extinct. Because what exactly do y’all think happens after every pet is neutered? I realize there’s a radical fringe that believes that death is better than slavery (that is, being someone’s pet). Perhaps you just want animals to be safely dead, the way that PETA does (they kill 97% of the animals they “save”.

  • http://www.greenisthenewred.com Will Potter

    Harmony:

You may take the cake for most ridiculous Troll we’ve seen on GreenIsTheNewRed.com. Thanks for making me laugh first thing in the morning.

  • Kathy

Harmony: Women have choices, animals do not. As a woman, I still think very highly of Bob Barker because of his advocacy for animals regardless of his relationships with women.

  • alexandra

I just did a ton of research on behalf of an activist prisoner (yes, the Bob Barker who supplies prison commissaries is NOT the Price is Right Bob Barker). The gameshow host Bob Barker also donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to law schools to institute programs for defending the rights of animals, most notable in recent history to Harvard. His foundation is named after his mother and wife, both life-long animal rescuers.
The Bob Barker who is a billionaire from supplying overpriced crap to jail commissaries is not in any way affiliated with animal rights (and is in my opinion long overdue for a serious criminal investigation into his own profits from government and private jail contracts).

Chalk up another fan of Bob Barker…

  • Simone

wow i love this man!!! im going to put him sayin that onto my cellphone hehe
