Eugene benefit with Lauren Regan and Will Potter

There will be a potluck and letter writing party for political prisoners, and then Lauren and I will be speaking about the recent arrests, the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, the Green Scare and where this is all heading.

The last time I was out in Eugene, it was for the Operation Backfire sentencings. These circumstances aren’t much better, considering the recent arrests, but there are lots of great folks in Eugene and I’m looking forward to getting back. If you’re in the Eugene area, I hope to see you there!

AETA 4 Benefit with Peter Young and Will Potter

Hey Portland: Another benefit for the AETA 4 when I’m in town. This one with former animal liberation prisoner Peter Young. Young was prosecuted using the original version of the Animal Enterprise Protection Act for releasing mink from fur farms. The recent arrests, under the new Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, are for largely First Amendment activity. We’ll be talking about the recent arrests and where this is all heading.

I was out in Washington for part of the Briana Waters trial, just before she was found guilty on two counts of arson for an Earth Liberation Front arson at the University of Washington. What struck me most about the experience was that not only must she deal with former friends becoming government informants, and not only must she deal with the press and courts and prisons labeling her a “terrorist,” but Waters also has a young child.

This looks like an interesting event. Marie Mason was arrested recently and charged with a 1999 arson at Michigan State University, and subsequently had her co-defendant become a government informant. Derrick Jensen is a wonderful author, and his writing blends a wide variety of issues, including environmental and civil liberties concerns.

They’re holding a live webcast together, and folks around the country are setting up community events to coincide with the viewing. For instance, here in DC:

Marie Mason is a school teacher in Cincinatti, Ohio, a long-time
environmental and labor union activist and a loving mother of two. On
March 10th, Marie was arrested by FBI, Homeland Security, and local police
and charged with the destruction of logging equipment related to an
incident in Michigan in 2000, and another incident in 1999 related to an
arson at Michigan State University.

This is one of the more recent developments, in what many have dubbed the
“Green Scare”, a recent wave of repression aimed at disrupting and
discrediting grassroots environmental activism and criminalizing dissent.

I mentioned earlier that I’ll be speaking at the National Conference on Organized Resistance, and I also wanted to let you all know about a benefit concert that weekend for Briana Waters.

Briana Waters is a devoted, loving mother and partner, a dedicated
musician and violin teacher, and a caring friend to many. It has come as
quite a shock to everyone who knows her that she has been wrongly accused
of participating in a politically motivated arson at the University of
Washington claimed by the Earth Liberation Front. These charges carry a
draconian mandatory minimum sentence of 35 years in prison should she be
convicted. Her trial began on Feb. 11, 2008 and is expected to last one
month. All money raised from this event will go towards childcare and

I just received a copy of The Secret World of Terijian, a children’s book that some folks have put out to raise money for individuals labeled “eco-terrorists” and hit with terrorism enhancement penalties for property destruction in the name of the environment.

It’s a cute little book about two kids, Connor and Moriko, who find bulldozers destroying the forest where they love to play and explore, and how they try to stop them. Think Bridge to Terabithia, but with balaclavas. My favorite line of the book– particularly relevant as Daniel McGowan just reported to prison as a “terrorist”– is when one of the children comforts the other, and says: “There’s a time to cry, and a time to fight back.”

It wasn’t long ago that industry groups labeled Hoot “soft core eco-terrorism for kids” because the protagonists fight to end a development project that threatens a population of endangered owls. And Charlotte’s Web, we’re told, promotes animal rights extremism.

I can’t wait to see what they have to say about this one…
