The Anderson Valley Advertiser (a small independent newspaper in Northern California where Darryl lived) spent years making the case that Darryl was really the one behind the bombing. I don't remember all of the details (it's been 15 years) but it took into account the government settlement.

They had been on the road organizing Redwood Summer, a campaign to save old-growth forests inspired by the Freedom Summer of the civil rights movement. … The two were in Bari’s Subaru station wagon when a pipe bomb exploded underneath her, injuring Cherney and nearly killing her. Hours later, while Bari was still in Oakland’s Highland Hospital, local police arrested them and said they had knowingly transported the bomb—that they were responsible for their own bombing. Back in june 2001 I was witness of a terrorist attack in Tel Aviv. This Palestinian man drops of the taxi near the beach and explodes himself and dozens of other people who were waiting outside a Russian club. I was walking on the beach and felt like a soundless wave of air. I ran and sow pieces of people spread on the floor. Why and how this Palestinian could do it, I steel don’t understand. What I mean with this is simple. Terrorism is to make people living terrified. So when you start to be afraid to be an environmentalist, who is the terrorist?
