Will Potter is an award-winning independent journalist based in Washington, D.C., who focuses on how the “War on Terrorism” affects civil liberties.
He has tracked how lawmakers and corporations have labeled animal rights and environmental activists as “eco-terrorists.” And he has closely followed the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, the Earth Liberation Front arrests in “Operation Backfire,” and the landmark First Amendment case of the SHAC 7.
Will has testified before the U.S. Congress on his reporting, and frequently speaks with journalists and in public forums about efforts to roll back civil liberties in the name of fighting terrorism. Speaking engagements have included the New York City Bar Association, Yale Law School and the Los Angeles County Bar Association, among many others.
He has written for publications including: The Chicago Tribune, The Dallas Morning News, Legal Affairs, The Chronicle of Higher Education, In These Times, The Texas Observer, The Washington City Paper, Z and Counterpunch. His work has circulated widely on political websites, and has appeared in textbooks such as Opposing Viewpoints. He is also the creator of GreenIsTheNewRed.com, where he blogs about the Green Scare and history repeating itself.
Will frequently ghostwrites op-ed columns for public figures—including a former U.S. president, members of Congress and a former assistant defense secretary—on civil liberties issues like the Patriot Act. They have appeared in publications like USA Today, The Washington Times and The Orlando Sentinel.
His reporting on the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act has been recognized by Project Censored “for outstanding investigative journalism,” as one of the top 25 “stories that didn’t make the news” in 2007. He has also received the Mark of Excellence award for feature writing, presented by the Society of Professional Journalists, in addition to recognition from Scripps Howard, Lantern Books and the Press Club of Dallas.
Will graduated summa cum laude from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in journalism. He is currently pursuing a master’s in writing from The Johns Hopkins University, while working full time.

You did a great job at the Legislative Hearing on H.R. 4239. Thank You
nice photo.
Thank you very much for the work that you do. It is so extremely important to keep people informed, and it is so comforting in these tumultuous and devious times to have journalists with integrity in whom we can trust to investigate and report back to us!
Our civil rights are indeed threatened each day that this war continues. More and more it is us who is being painted as terrorists, simply because we want to see change. The war is on our homefront, with issues like animal rights and the right to voice our concerns to the torture going on at our hand.
It is a war of between the chemical industry and life, if you ask me. They’re killing animals, they’re killing trees, and they’re killing us.
The medical system is killing us all and we know it, but yet we are bound to perscribe to a system that does not work. Why? Because that’s the way that the system’s set up. It’s set up for profit, that’s why…NOT because modern medicine works.
The statistics are there…in their own words. Look to the records of the CDC, the AMA, the FDA, etc. The medical system is the number 1 killer in the U.S. when you combine the deaths which occur as the result of medical mistakes, pharmaceutical side effects, surgical risks, and patient error.
Our environment is dying away, and we know it, what with global warming and horrible toxicities in the air, water and soil, yet we just keep adding more and more in. Who benefits? The chemical industry, of course! Who loses? Life.
I am a doctor of naturopathy, and yet my hands are tied in so many ways to help people in the ways I know how, likewise is my tongue tied, by laws that do not allow me to speak. The research is there, though, and natural ways have worked since the very beginning of time. Unless we turn back to non-chemical ways of existing, they are going to win against life.
My question for them is, who will be left to spend all the money they make?
Anyways, thank you for reporting the truth in a time when all they want us to hear are lies. I’m glad there are those brave enough to investigate what’s really true and to bring the news back to us.
Our civil rights are effected by EVERYTHING that’s going on!
Blessings to you,
Vibraceous, ND

You spoke eloquently at the AR Conference this weekend, it’s lovely to have such a person on the side of the voiceless. Also, sorry for calling you “sir”. haha
I really admire your drive to spread the word and make a difference. 14 years ago when i first went veg it felt as if the entire world thought I was mad and I had no allies, and now I constantly meet people who have common compassion and since have been able to rekindle my optimism that a change in our society is underway.
It was refreshing to speak with you and we should meet up again someday in the near future.
Ciao! Nicole
